Random stranger: "Are you married?"
Me: "No."
Stranger: "I'm divorced."
Me: "I'm sorry to hear that. That's hard."
Stranger: "I'm not. I'm remarried now to the most wonderful man in the world. Honey, make sure you love the man you marry with all of your heart."
Lately, I have had many conversations like this about dating and marriage. And they are all just about the same: "make sure he's a good guy"; "make sure you love him"; "be sure to follow YOUR dreams too"; "be happy where you are"
But there have also been quite a few nuggets of gold within these conversations:
"Flattery gets you no where, money gets you lots further."
"I've got rules. No inactives, no uglies, he has to have a good job and an education."
"This one kid that likes me-- he's rich... I don't know if I just want a sugar daddy or if I actually like him."
"Anybody can marry for love. Not a lot of people can marry for money."[what I'm learning from these conversations is maybe I should start looking for rich guys... hahaha. just kidding.]
Most of the time these conversations end with: "hey, I have this friend..."
I love having these conversations with people because they remind me that people really do care about me and they do want me to find someone, but mostly I think they just want me to be happy. Truth: There are days when I loathe being a singleton. {honesty is the best policy} I'm learning a lot in this weird stage of life. Plus, I'll never have this stage again-- might as well enjoy it.
"In all of living, have much fun and laughter. Life is to be enjoyed, not just endured." {President Gordon B. Hinckley}
And also, "I don't want to be married just to be married. I can't think of anything lonelier than spending the rest of my life with someone I can't talk to, or worse, someone I can't be silent with." {The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, Mary Ann Shaffer}
